Saying the crowd went hard would be a severe understatement - as RL lead the people through the song of the year, Lil Uzi’s three-times platinum “XO Tour Llif3″, the venue shook. Steinway continued the hip hop theme with Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble”, surrounded on stage by LED screens flashing a variety of visuals that included the RL GRIME logo. A “Mercy” remix into a core drop early in the night saw the crowd erupt, and security scramble to keep things under control.

Steinway impressed with a mix of old and new, and the audience loved every moment of it. It wasn’t going to be your average trap show. After a strong entrance, RL mixed seamlessly into Rae Sremmund’s “Black Beatles”, inducing a singalong from the get-go, and giving a little peek of the genre-transcending work we were in for. It’s clear that, over the years, the WeDidIt collaborator has developed his stage presence, live shows, production and set lists to better suit his audience, who are maturing alongside him. Now 26 years of age, Steinway has been producing music, collaborating, spearheading genres, touring and playing shows, prior to even being able to legally drink in his own country. Steinway’s silhouette appeared in the centre of colourful smoke that was billowing over his shoulders. The room roared with the melody, singing along to the synths and moshing en masse. As the first drop of the song hit the speakers, a strong purple strobe light filled the room, beaming from behind the massive LED-screened DJ booth, and setting the floor ablaze. After a set of her own tunes during which she bust out some seriously impressive dance breaks, the Adelaide-based rapper had the crowd bouncing in unison as she wrapped up with a heavily trapped-out remix of Migos’ “Bad & Boujee” mashed with Kendrick Lamar’s “m.A.A.d City”, perfectly preparing the bodies in the room for what joy was to come.Īs the lights were switched off, darkness filled the Hordern and the intro synths to RL’s first single of 2017 “Reims” engulfed the venue and its contents waves of subtle cheers were heard as the bass built around the crowd’s enthusiasm.

As Tkay Maidza warmed the audience up for RL, it was clear to see why she was hand-picked by the headliner as his support act. On Friday night, the Hordern Pavilion and its surroundings were buzzing with over 5,000 cold and excited punters as the LA producer’s largest ever headline show down under was in motion. Since then, trap has become a a massive sub-genre that has taken the world by storm, and RL Grime ( Henry Steinway) is positioned as one of its pioneers. Snare rolls and heavy-hitting bass were were blended with the sub-bass and slow tempos of dubstep, and traditional hip hop melodies, to create trap music. With two EP’s and a world tour under his belt, 2014 looks to be RL Grime’s brightest year to date, continuing to refine his sound and further pushing the boundaries of what it means to be a producer in the 21st century. The year 2012 saw a significant shift in electronic dance music, as it began to infiltrate the earliest forms of trap music. RL Grime’s work as a remixer has also been met with great acclaim, clocking in official remixes for Benny Benassi, Chief Keef, Jamie Lidell, and Shlohmo – as well as a bootleg of “Mercy” by Kanye West, which has since received over 3 million plays on SoundCloud. In 2013 he released his sophomore EP High Beams on Fools Gold Records, debuting at number 8 on Billboard’s electronic charts. Releasing his debut EP Grapes in April of 2012 on LA’s WEDIDIT imprint, RL took little time in making a name for himself, garnering early support from some of the biggest DJ’s in the world, including Diplo, A-Trak, Skrillex, and Just Blaze. Seemingly out of nowhere, 22-year-old Henry Steinway aka RL Grime has risen the ranks to the forefront of what is a new generation genre-fusing artists, setting eyes on exploring the uncharted and reshaping modern music with every new track he makes.
